How You Feel is What You Get

Ever wake up in a horrible, rotten mood? What kind of day can you expect to have? A horrible, rotten one, right?

Why? Because the way you feel determines what happens in your life. That’s why tending to our emotions, making sure we feel good, is the most important work we can do. Until we feel better, our lives can’t get better.

I was at the beach with my kids not too long ago. It was a picture-perfect South Florida spring morning. We were at one of our favorite snorkeling locations, enjoying the array of marine life.

As I was sitting my chair pretending not to notice my kids fighting enjoying my book, a couple set up on a blanket behind me. From the moment they sat down, it was one complaint after another. The sand was too dirty, the beach was too crowded, the parking lot was too full.

It amazed me to hear because they were living exactly the same experience as the rest of us on the beach, but couldn’t enjoy any of it. It would be next to impossible for them to enjoy their day at the beach.

Now, I’m not judging them. We’ve ALL been that couple at times in our lives. When you’re frustrated, your day is filled with things that you find frustrating. When you’re worried, your day is filled with anxiety-provoking events.

So many people work really hard to try to control the events of their lives, thinking that if they get better control over these events, then they’ll feel better. Unfortunately, that isn’t the way it works. You must start by feeling better and then you’ll notice things in your life start to improve.
